Her mother a prostitute, Mary Bell lived a very unconventional childhood.
Mary Bell was ten years old when she committed her first murder. On May 25, 1987 Mary Bell committed her first of two brutal murders; the murder of four year old Martin Brown. She was allegedly alone during this murder. During the second murder on July 31, 1968, Bell acquired a partner in crime by the name of Norma Bell, who was of no family relation. This murder was of three year old Brian Howe. Both of Mary Bell's victims were strangled to death and she also had mutilated the corpses including the genitalia. Concerning the death of Brian Howe, police report that Mary Bell returned to the scene of the crime to carve an 'N' into the toddler's corpse and then change it into an 'M'; the significance of this is unknown. The motives of her crimes were unclear and the two girl's testimonies often contradicted one another but one thing was for sure, Mary Bell showed clear symptoms of a psychopath.
